Social Media Marketing: Twitter to Introduce Geolocation API, 3rd Party Experimental Features

Twitter is a social media marketing platform behemoth that knows how to cater to its users. The basic principle of social media marketing is about connecting with those who use your product or service and forming relationships with them. Twitter is taking this advice and improving its social media platform again and again for ease of use.

Yesterday, Twitter confirmed that it will introduce “Lists.” The feature will allow for the creation of lists of interesting Twitter users. By default, the lists will be public and displayed on your profile. With a simple click, any user can follow it. This feature is still in its testing stages.

The social media marketing giant is also testing is a Geolocation API. This enables a user to see the coordinates for the location where their friends tweet. However, this will be available through third party applications only. You have the option to opt in or out, but it’s been a much buzzed about feature.

The most interesting announcement was publicized today. Just as Google provides its Gmail users with Google Labs, Twitter intends to roll out a similar tool for experimental features. The difference is that Google Labs caters to Google products while Twitter intends on letting developers run wild and produce their own add-ons for the site. This will be convenient for users, who currently have to dig through the web for useful third party applications. Now, the add-ons will be easily accessible on the main site.

It’s been interesting to see how social media marketing platforms continue to develop. Twitter started off with 140-character tweets, but real-time search and Twitter Trends are keeping social media marketing competitors on their toes. In terms of social media marketing, the improvements in ease of use only make each platform more popular. Is there a social media site you prefer because of the features it offers?
