10 Tips on Getting the Most Out of Twitter

Social media marketing advisor Chris Brogan wrote up a useful blog about 50 Ideas on Using Twitter for Business. He put up some good points that everyone should follow. When approaching social media marketing, don’t assume that everyone wants to stop and hear what you say. You need to spruce up your game plan to show onlookers you’ve got something more to offer them than just shameless self-promotion. Twitter, and other social media marketing tools like it, are all about getting your name out there. In the end, it might not matter how much you know if your client base is small. Social media marketing can help you expand your network to your own advantage if you know how to use it properly.

Getting Acquainted with Twitter and Its Culture

1. Once you’ve got your account set up, do a quick TwitterSearch for relevant keywords. Good keywords include your company name, competitor’s names, and any and all keyterms that relate to what you want to market. For example, Cybertegic wants to know more about social media marketing on twitter. Type in “social media marketing” or some variation of it, and TwitterSearch will generate all the tweets we want with the term.

2. Be Human. This category has a good number of subcategories. Basically-- don’t go around Twitter doing the bare minimum.

  • Add an image so that people can associate your updates with a person or a logo.
  • Respond back to your followers updates too. Social media marketing on sites like Twitter should be about reciprocal exchange. This means no shameless self-promotion! People will eventually stop listening.

Content is King. What Should My Tweets Be About?

3. Feel free to link to your own information. In moderation, that is. While some may enjoy just Cybertegic related posts, we also know that people enjoy interesting stories, videos, and pictures relating to what we do as well. Also, keep it relevant. Don’t just dump links because you can. Make sure your followers can get something out of it.

4. Ask your followers questions. Your crowd is more than willing to participate if the right chance comes up. Maybe they’ll be the muse for your next blog post.

Tips on Tweeting

5. You don’t have to read or reply to every tweet. Sort through which ones seem relevant and comment when you can. This also includes finding your company name on TwitterSearch and commenting when possible. This is what’s great about social media marketing. You get to be as involved as you want. But please take advantage of the direct messages for more in-depth conversations to avoid spamming your home-page with unnecessary updates.

6. If you want to post a link, check out URL shortening tools like TinyURL to keep it short and sweet.

7. Try third party Twitter widgets, like SocialOomph.com. These applications are so useful they can even be better than using Twitter directly for all your social media marketing needs.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

8. One downside of social media marketing is that it is time consuming. Trying to think up a witty 140 character tweet takes time. Not to mention time spent looking for followers who will take the time to hear you out. The upside? If you do it well, the rewards will be great. Your internet presence can be expanded exponentially and will help you communicate faster with your clients.

9. Twitter can mean opening your company up to criticism. True, but everyone needs some constructive criticism. This will offer you opportunities to learn from your mistakes. Good companies are always adapting. If you don’t make changes, you’re not following what social media marketing is all about.

10. Don’t abuse Twitter by sending out a useless message every 10 minutes. But Twitter can be useful for informing people what you’re up to. You can even ask for a solution to a problem.
