1. Login to your Twitter account first.
2. If you already have somebody in mind to follow on Twitter who is also in the same field as you are, just go ahead and go to their Twitter profile and click on the link that says “followers”. (If you’re not sure of what username or profile URL those you want to follow are using, see numbers 3 and 4 below.)
Fig.1
The idea is that this person’s followers would probably be interested in you also since you are in the same field of expertise as s/he is. So, you can be sure it’s safe to follow his followers and that they are most likely to follow you back:
Fig. 2 (check marks indicate those you are already following)
However, before you click the follow button, take a few seconds to read the little bits of info (which is the current tweet/status update of that person) to see whether or not following him/her would be good for you image, reputation, credibility, visibility, business etc., i.e. not showing signs of being a spammer.
3. There is a search box on the right column of the home page:
Fig. 3
Go to the home page anytime by clicking “Home” in the navigation menu on the upper right or the Twitter logo on the upper left of the page.
Fig. 4
You can type any search term or the name of a person in this search box. The results that will show up are usually those active Twitterers at that moment, i.e. those who have recently updated their Twitter status mentioning keywords that are relevant to your search terms.
Once you’ve found a suitable candidate to follow, just click on his/her photo or username and again follow their followers as in procedure number 2.
4. To get better results in gaining followers, you can go to a Twitter “yellow pages” called Twellow.com.
Fig. 5
At Twellow (no login necessary to start using), the search results is arranged with the person with the most followers on top. So, if you’ve typed your niche keyword, you get all those with a definite background relevant with your specified niche and not just those talking about your niche at that moment. That is the difference between using the method in number 3 above and using Twellow. (Note: you can type other relevant searches while keeping in mind that on the search results page, select the ones who are not directly in competition with your business.)
Fig. 6
When you’ve decided whose followers you should follow, click on his/her username as shown in fig. 6 and repeat procedure number 2 on how to proceed to follow people.
5. You must not exceed to follow a total of 250 people in one day.
6. As the ones you’ve followed started to follow you back, Twitter will send email alerts for each new follower (so be sure to allow Twitter to send you emails in the Settings>Notices page). Click on the appropriate link…
…to land on your new follower’s profile where you’ll see this on the right column, click the “message” link:
» Hi, thank you for the follow! I hope you like our tweets.
» Thank you for following me! May you have a nice day always.
» Thanks for the following! I appreciate it deeply...see ya around!
» Looking forward for your tweets.
» Thank you for the follow! I wish we can contribute to your online success by sharing with you our knowledge.
The above messages are examples of what you can send your new followers.
Repeat this number 6 procedure until all email alerts are read.
7. You can use Tweetlater.
which you can setup to automatically follow back and send the thank you messages like those examples above to those people who follow you. However, Tweetlater’s program only works for those events when people follow you first.
It means that procedures 1 to 6 are for acquiring more Twitter followers in a shorter period of time, while Tweetlater does the automated work of auto-following back those who follow YOU when:
1. You are away from Twitter and someone follows you.
2. Someone sees your Twitter status has been updated by you to let your friends know about a newly published article on your blog and follows you on Twitter.
3. You do micro-blogging and someone gets interested, checks your site or blog out and then follows you on Twitter.
Note: Many are using Twitter’s search box every second of the day and if you are micro-blogging more frequently you are going to show up every time your keywords are mentioned in the queries made by the Twitter population and will ultimately result in more traffic and more followers.
