Social Media Put into Perspective
This infographic, created by Jesse Thomas of Jess3, shows the proportional size of social media sites and online providers like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Gmail and Skype. For example, only about one third of the 500 million users on Facebook are actively using their Facebook mobile application. The infographic puts social media into perspective, and also clearly shows that the usage of location applications (such as Foursquare and Google Latitude) are depedent upon the mobile web.

Mobile Phones are the Future for All Communication
A recent study released by Nielsen Media Research shows that the disparity between Internet and mobile phone usage in developed nations and developing nations is staggering. Although Internet usage numbers trend quite normally, mobile communication numbers are astounding. Ownership and usage levels exceed over 100%, a result of users owning more than one phone.
Nielsen predicts, “Over the next 5-10 years, mobile penetration will rise to roughly 140 phones per 100 inhabitants, even in very low per capita GDP countries, and then rise gradually with income. At that point, the gap in mobile communication between developed and emerging economies will have largely disappeared, although some differences in technological sophistication will remain. In fact, within emerging markets, mobile communication may actually foster greater business and GDP growth, creating a feedback loop which will further boost mobile penetration, which is part of the disruption caused by this technology.”
Mobile phones are going to fuel the future the global economy. With a pocket-sized object, you’re able to reach out to people all over the world though a simple upload to any social media site, including Twitter, Facebook, or even Youtube.

Social Gaming Creating Revenue for Social Media
Facebook is the largest social media site by far with 500 million users. However, the smaller social media sites have the advantage when it comes to size for social gaming because smaller social media sites are able to create a more tightly knit community among the gamers. Social games have the ability to transform smaller social media sites into profitable platforms by creating a website that users will continually come back to.

Social Media News: Receive Tweets without joining Twitter and an Official Twitter Widget
When social media giant Twitter first started micro-blogging, the only way to send tweets was via text message. For this reason, all tweets are at most 140 characters because it all must fit into a single text message. Now, Twitter has returned to the mobile phone and added more features that enable users to use SMS text.
Within the United States, anyone can receive tweets on their mobile phones without joining Twitter. This is the best way for anyone to follow someone without going through the hassle of joining yet another social media site. To use the mobile feature, you can text a dedicated number to follow people, or click on a mobile icon to receive tweets on your mobile phone. You will receive a text message immediately after someone you follow sends out a tweet. If the tweets get too overwhelming, you can simply send an “off” text back to Twitter to halt the tweets, and just as easily send an “on” text message to Twitter to start receiving tweets again.
In other news, Twitter is also launching an official widget to add to your websites and blogs for sharing. The official widget can be available as soon as the end of this week.

Social Media News: Updates to Twitter and Facebook
Twitter News:
As of today, social media site Twitter has more than a hundred million users. As a business owner it’s important to know how to find people to follow? Well, if you’ve logged into your Twitter recently you may have noticed Twitter rolled out a new suggestion feature, “Who to Follow.” The new feature will suggest relevant people that you do not currently follow and that you “may find interesting.” Similar to the Facebook “People You May Know,” you can either hide the suggestion or click to follow.
Facebook News:
In other news, Facebook has been listening to users’ complaints about security settings. Now, all of the Facebook privacy settings are accessible through your mobile device. Unlike other social media sites, Facebook is providing a way to control your privacy settings through your mobile web by going to m.facebook.com/privacy. This is an exciting new way to manage your information as more and more people are accessing and posting through their mobile phones. Now you will be able to customize the content that is seen via your mobile phone.

Internet Users Spend Most of Their Time on Social Media Sites and Blogs
In a study done by Nielsen Media Research, the population of the United States generally spends about a quarter of their time on social media sites: Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. This is an almost 10% increase from last year’s data. Furthermore, the data released by the Nielson Company reveals that social media and blogs will soon become the main source of communication between individuals.
When people first started using the Internet, email was the primary motivation in signing on to the World Wide Web. However, email usage has been gradually dropping; it has dropped from 11.5% to 8.3% since last year. Now that iPhones and Blackberrys are the norm, most emails are checked via mobile internet. As Americans are using the Internet, it is gradually transitioned from checking emails to checking their social media sites and blogs.
For any company looking into Internet marketing, social media marketing is a must. In addition to the data, Nielsen created a pie chart of an hour worth of time what an American would spend doing on the Internet.
